Fluorescence Explained
PROPERTIES:
-
2 to 10 nanometers in diameter (Okaba, 2007)
-
Specific to certain cells if bioconjugated (Smith, Dave, Nie, True, & Gao, 2006)
-
Hydrophilic exterior after bioconjugation (Shao, Gao, & Feng 2011)
-
Photostable and resistant to photobleaching (Lee et al., 2004)
-
Fluorescent (Mandal, Dandapat, & De 2012)
We chose to investigate fluorescence because with high fluorescence, cancerous growth can be detected even if cancer cell count is low (Weng, 2006).
This will enable safer surgery, detection of metastasis, and earlier detection of cancerous growth, all of which are crucial to saving lives.
