Why Quantum Dots?
Cancer kills 7.4 million people in the world today (Smith, Dave, Nie, True, & Gao, 2006)
This means that one person dies every 3 seconds.
Current methods of treatment are ineffective:
-
Chemotherapy kills healthy tissue (Yu et al., 2012)
-
MRI and CT Scans cannot locate microtumours (Lee, Galloway, Park, Dvoracek, & Dallas, 2012) and result in high operational risk as the surgeon has to refer to a scan diagram while operating
Quantum Dots allow direct targeting of cancerous tissue without needing to refer to a diagram (refer to rat with stomach cancer)
Quantum Dots can also locate microtumours (Liang et al., 2009)
