Synthesis of Copper Indium Sulfide Core

APPARATUS

  • Weighing Scale

  • Magnetic Stirrer

  • Heating Mantle

  • 3-Neck Flask

  • Micropipette

MATERIALS

PROCEDURE

  1. 0.1 mmol of Indium Acetate and 0.1 mmol of Copper (I) Iodide were combined with 1.0 ml of Dodecanethiol and 8.0 ml of Octadecene in a 50 ml three neck flask.

  2. The mixture was heated to 50 degrees Celsius under a nitrogen atmosphere to limit the amount of oxygen and allow the solution to be magnetically stirred for one hour.

  3. The reaction temperature was then increased to 220 degrees Celsius for 15-290 min.

  4. The colour of the reaction mixture turned from colourless to yellow, orange, red then dark red.

  5. Thereafter, the reaction was stopped.

VIDEO

The video depicts the initial heating of the reaction mixture to 50 degrees Celsius and the color changes that are observed when the mixture is later heated to 220 degrees Celsius.
